My name is Cole Okimi and I'm currently a great 10 student at Almaguin Highlands Secondary School.
I enjoyed, pre-covid, being in the Gamers club, drama and Nortek skiing clubs. I also enjoy being on multiple baseball teams and playing the sport alongside my friends and family.
I love to volunteer and starting from the summer of 2019 to February 2020, I accumulated 107 volunteer hours. If it wasn't for the darned COVID-19 the sky would have been my limit.
I value honesty, fairness, respect, caring, trustworthiness, and keeping your promises. "If you don't have values for yourself, you have nothing."
I love to spend as much time as I can playing video games and chatting with my friends. I also love to be outside. My favourite hobbies include fishing, ice fishing, snow shoeing, one Wheeling, biking and playing sports.
One of my funniest baseball stories that happened a couple of summers ago. During a baseball practice, my coach decided to put me in shortstop (a position that I hadn't played many times before). The team gets onto the field and takes their assigned positions. The first person up to bat hits a grounder (a ball that is hit from the bat onto the ground and starts rolling at a high speed) right to me. As I squat down to nab the ball, I hear a loud ripping sound. Even though I couldn’t see what happened I knew I had just ripped my shorts. I shake that thought out of my head and go down for the ball and throw it to first base for an out. Now that I have a minute I look down at my shorts and sure enough there’s a rip in them stretching from my hip to my knee. Lucky for me I had compression wear under my shorts. It could have been soo much worse. However, this was only the start of practice so I just ignored it and kept playing my position.
After practice my coach comes up to me and says I'm proud of you for sticking with the game even though your shorts ripped.
After practice I went home feeling exhausted and a little embarrassed. All and all it’s still pretty funny every time I remember that day.
As we look back at the past year dealing with Covid-19 I feel like I’ve grown into a better student because I’m able to focus on my studies and take time for myself. Even though I miss seeing my friends it’s better to social distance and not risk get sick or spreading Covid to someone else. Going forward I hope for a better 2021
